Day 4: Poutine and Perspective

Day 4 was refreshingly uneventful.

No tire blowouts.

No border crossings.

No emergency paperwork searches.

Just a lot of miles and a lot of windshield time.

The biggest adventure of the day came at mealtime when Dax and Ana tried poutine for the first time. For those unfamiliar, poutine is a Canadian specialty consisting of fries topped with cheese curds and gravy.

Both kids were fans.

One thing that surprised them about Canada is how familiar everything feels. They were expecting it to look different, more exciting, maybe even a little exotic. Instead, much of the drive looked remarkably similar to what they’ve seen throughout the United States.

“So much for it looking different” -Ana

The roads look familiar.

The stores look familiar.

The people seem familiar.

From Ana’s perspective, the day started early.

They were up around 5:30 a.m. and headed downstairs for breakfast. Her plan was pancakes, but the pancake machine had other ideas. After settling for what she described as “gross bacon,” they hit the road for another day in Canada.

Ten hours of driving makes for a long day, but Ana’s favorite stop came around lunchtime. They pulled into a gas station, grabbed lunch at Dairy Queen, and picked up a squishy dumpling souvenir from the gift shop before getting back on the road.

Then they drove.

And drove.

And drove some more.

After several fuel stops and countless miles, they finally arrived at their hotel around dinner time. Not wanting to eat hotel snacks for dinner, Ana and Papa walked across the street to a nearby restaurant. After waiting at the front desk for several minutes while the employee remained focused on her phone and never acknowledged them, they decided to take their business elsewhere.

Fortunately, the next restaurant welcomed them immediately and dinner was saved.

Meanwhile, back in D.C., Zoe got to enjoy a much less mobile adventure. She met up with her best buddy for ice cream, soaking up one more memory before our family officially heads in different directions and begins the next chapter.

Not every day on an adventure is filled with excitement.

Sometimes it’s just miles, conversations, new foods, and time spent getting closer to your destination.

Today was one of those days.
